Celebrate the Return of Salmon – November 14
Attend two free events on Chico Creek and learn more about salmon in Kitsap County.
Celebrate the return of the salmon to Kitsap County on Saturday, November 14. Watch migrating salmon and learn from fish biologists at two locations on Chico Creek in Bremerton: Mountaineers Foundation Rhododendron Preserve and Chico Salmon Park at Golf Club Hill Road and Chico Way.
This free event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at both locations. Activities are for all ages and include informational booths, refreshments, and viewing salmon in the stream. At Chico Creek they will serve hot soup and salmon hats for the kids! Biologists will talk about the various types of salmon in Kitsap, the salmon life cycle and healthy fish habitat.
Dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes. A visit to the Mountaineers Foundation Rhododendron Preserve involves a hike down to the stream through old growth forest with the last walking tour starting at 1 pm. Or stop by anytime from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Chico Salmon Park.

Past Events:
Thanks to the many volunteers who spent the day cutting blackberries and pulling ivy, our work parties have been tremendous successes.
Work Party:
Great work at this March event everyone! The weeds we pulled in February were hauled away and native western red cedar (Thuja plicata) planted.

Please join us Saturday, February 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.for a noxious weed removal and tree planting work party! February is the perfect time to plant trees, when nature will water them for us and the trees put down good healthy root structures during that time.
The parking lot is just south of the entrance to the Kitsap Golf and Country Club. We will have refreshments and food and some tools available. We’ll be there rain or shine, so please dress for the weather.
Bring your February
- gardening gloves,
- loppers, and pruners.
We’ll be using the loppers and pruners to cut down the blackberries, as well as weed wrenches to remove the February Weed of the month: scotch broom. We will have cedar tree seedlings to plant at the park in place of the non-native weeds.
WSU Kitsap Extension Stream Stewards, Beach Naturalists, Native Plant Advisors volunteers will also be on hand. It’s a great opportunity to learn and also to get Salmon Viewing Park on its way to becoming a destination site to learn about salmon and salmon habitat.
